Secret Proposal captured by Hyunah Jang Photography

My job as a photographer often takes me to the most stunning locations in the world. One of my most memorable assignments was when I was hired to capture photos for a Secret Proposal. The job required me to hike 8 miles to the Hanakapiai waterfall in Kauai Island with my clients Rubio and Tanya.

When Rubio first reached out, his romantic proposal idea piqued my interest. I don't think I hesitated even for a second. Who wouldn't want to capture a beautiful couple in front of one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world on the luscious island of  Kauai?

We met at the entrance of the hike at 6 am and started to hike up. Rubio introduced me to Tanya as a tour guide. He told her I would be taking some photos of them on the way to the waterfall. She had no idea Rubio was planning on proposing to her on the top of the waterfall.

Tanya is a gorgeous woman, inside and out, who is adventurous and full of energy. We started the hike together, smooth and easy, taking enough breaks. We stopped at the beach on the way there, put our feet in the stream, and crossed the river helping each other safely.

After 3 hours of hiking, we finally got to the waterfall. I will never forget their faces full of sparkles. Rubio looked at me, and I gave him the 'go' sign as we planned over the phone. Rubio sat Tanya down on the rock and started talking to her to set the mood. I backed up where I could see them and the waterfall in the backdrop. I held my 70-200mm lens steady, pointing at them.

Rubio unveiled the ring out, much to her surprise. She immediately teared up. A huge smile came over her face and said she said yes. It was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever seen, and I was so grateful and happy to capture these images, and the long hike didn't seem to tire me at all.

Our journey back was delightful. Tanya kept looking at her ring and couldn't believe what had just happened. Rubio was the happiest man on earth, and they told me their love story on the way down.

When we arrived back down safely, we watched the sunset at the beach. We were all so tired, but that day was such a special day for them and me. We ended our day with the most beautiful sunset. Even though it was a job for me, it didn't feel like it at all. I felt like I met lovely people and helped them capture this precious moment that they will cherish forever.

Tanya and Rubio got married last year and are living in Southern California. I wish them the happiest life together.
